Information for Agricultural Research Managers (INFORM)



INFORM is a computer-based management information system, including program budgeting to support agricultural research managers to use as a management tool in managing their research programs and resources at their institutions efficiently and effectively.

INFORM puts the various types of information, required for research managers in to one system. Mainly two types of information are involved in INFORM.
The first is resources available to research managers:

  • Facilities (land, buildings, equipment etc)
  • Personnel (scientists, adminitrators, technicians, other supporting staff)
  • Funds (core operating budget, funds available for capital development, funds derived from contract research and external donors)

  • The second is the way in which those resources are used as information about research programs and results of research programs etc.

    In the light of increased institutional activities coupled with growing scarcity of resources, as well as the complexities of the NARS, the Research Managers are faced with the problem of efficient and effective management of their research.
    A precise knowledge about the available resources, research programs and projects that are being carried out by the scientists in their institutions is a first prerequisite in efforts towards rationalization of research investments. With this in mind SLCARP has initiated this Management Information System for the NARS.

    SLCARP collects this information annually in electronic format from the 12 Research Institutions
    (CRI,RRI, SRI, TRI, VRI, NARA, IPHT, HARTI, DNBG, FD, DEA and DOA)
    in the NARS
    including 17 sub institutions of DOA
    (FCRDI, FRDI, HORDI, RRDI, GLORDC, SEPC, SCPPC, NRMC, PGRC, NPQS, FMRC, RARDC-AR, RARDC-BW, RARDC-BN, RARDC-KN, RARDC-MK).

    Collected information are processed and purified and this purified data is resubmitted to the relevant institutions for their use. All the information finally complied into one National Database for National use. Then this informatio n is analysed and prepare a report to use in research management. In addition of the database management, an annual Training programme is conducted to train new INFORM coordinators and to refreshes knowledge /skills of database management of existing coordinators.
